Why choose to pay for your services over having your health insurance cover a portion?
In the US, if you would like your health insurance to cover a portion of your counseling either by being billed and paying the provider directly, or by reimbursing you after you have paid for services, it is important to understand not only the benefits, but the potential risks to you. If you have health insurance, you will be asked about it and given the option to use it or to opt out, for any insurance except Iowa Medicaid (clients may not opt out of insurance usage if they have Iowa Medicaid). If you are wondering if the provider is in network with your plan, please use the website or phone number on the back of your card to check. Individuals who wish to use their health insurance will have a mental health diagnosis assigned to them, in order to document mental necessity. The client will be involved in this process and informed of the diagnos(es) assigned, and the justification for any diagnosis. If medical necessity cannot be established, health insurance cannot be used.
